"If we all did the things we are really capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” ― Thomas A. Edison
Move more
Every day is an opportunity to open up your body to movement. Dancing in the kitchen or walking the dog are great ways to move for 20 minutes. Movement provides an access to body knowledge and awareness. Pull out some yoga and feel the flow or simply break from your desk for a stretch and full in-breath. Move over mind, the body gets to sway and wiggle for its say.
"Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration." ― Thomas A. Edison
Call a friend or be your own best friend!
Be honest and vulnerable about what you are holding back from. Ask for support on how to think about it differently. All of my friends have new and fresh perspectives that vault me out of my own mind. Cut to the heart of it and bottom-line it with a trusted friend who has your back and wants you to push yourself too. Take what is useful and leave the rest.
Imagine the Expert
Imagine someone who HAS done what you are about to do. There is nothing more special about them than you. YOU’VE GOT THIS just as much. Keep trying. Keep working. Keep striving!
And Rest
Take a mental vacation. Imagine being in your favorite spot. Mine is the porch of my grandpa’s old vacation home. It feels safe, crisp, and energizing. Really imagine it with a 4 minute timer. Now, back to LIFE!
When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this - you haven't. ― Thomas Edison
It is never one way
When you find you are bumping up against a wall or block…Go Around. There are countless ways of doing something. Going around for me is imagining 3 other ways to get to the same goal. Choices feel empowering. NOT DOING is the only true failure. Remember,
“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” ― Thomas A. Edison
Pivot
When I’ve set my mind to something, I have difficulty changing course. I often ask for support and am honest about this quality because it is hard for me to change direction quickly. But life changes. We need to switch gears at times. So, pivot. It does not have to be a full turn. What about noticing an easier way to get to the goal? What about shifting expectations while on the journey? How can you be a little nicer and boosting of yourself in this journey? What would change if we remembered to pivot?
“Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless.” ― Thomas A. Edison
Pull out the STOPS
What are they for you?
Here are three stop thoughts that have crossed my desk:
Am I too old?
Do I need to learn more?
Am I ready for this?
Those are all stops to accomplishing what you CAN do. Notice if you are carrying around a list of can’t thoughts. Face the list and feel back, “I CAN” with curiosity. Now, let’s bust the list!
Am I too old? NO! You are never too old. Do it your way. Do it with style.
Do I need to learn more? Always! But learn as you go! Bypass the fear and set a do-date. I’m pulling out my weights over the weekend and have a routine loaded to begin on Monday. I’ve found the right beginner’s weight video for me. The date, time, and materials are covered. The do shall happen without excuse!
Am I ready for this? Jump! Feeling ready is an illusion. Once preparation work is well underway, don’t procrastinate the doing for “feeling ready”. Put on a “READY” mindset. Put your shoulders back, breathe into your chest, and stretch open for READY. You’ve got this.
“Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” ― Thomas A. Edison
